50 Paintings in 50 Days

This selection of fifty paintings I did for a show at the Sanchez Art Center juried by Catharine Clark. These paintings are based on the rejected 35mm photographic slides of others I found at SCRAP, a repository of cast-offs in San Francisco. Using an obsolete analog image source as inspiration, I was drawn to the history of each slide (some bearing dates seventy years ago) and to the myriad questions I had about each image. Who took the photos? What are the subjects? Where and why?

Because there were very few clues as to subject, year and location, (one slide, an intimate portrait of a luminous cob of corn, bore only the word “Corn” in tiny handwriting on the white cardboard border), I was left to decipher the significance of each slide.
